چکیده

By B. J. KENNEDY T HE SUCCESSFUL TREATMENT of cancer and leukemia by agents which have hematosuppressive effects depends upon a selective toxicity, whereby the tumor cell is inhibited rather than the normal cell. Further information is needed on the life of the leukocyte, particularly the generative cycle and the normal or abnormal physiologic rhythms. The basic mechanism of the movement of leukocytes and the turnover of these cells are not completely defined. Leukocyte dynamics have been difficult to study because of the many factors that affect the level of these cells in the peripheral blood. Moreover, the peripheral blood cell counts do not always indicate the rate of hernatopoiesis nor the size of the bone marrow reserve of the various cellular factors. By newer technics we are acquiring more insight into the dynamics of leukocyte movement in leukemia among various compartments.

Pregnancy Outcome of Two Patients with Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia Treated with Imatinib

Although chronic myelogenous leukemia in pregnancy is rare, its management and treatment is more difficult and complicated.Treatment of patients with chronic myelogenous leukemia includes bone marrow transplantation, however in less than 30% of patients the donor’s organ would be accepted. To this end, cytotoxic therapy is considered as an alternative therapeutic option. This option provides sa...

Function of Neutrophils in Different Phases of Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia

In chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML), the mature granulocytes originate from a stem cell line harboring an abnormal chromosome, therefore it is possible that metabolic-functional abnormalities occur in the morphologically mature cells. In the present study, the phagocytic activity including intracellular killing, nitro blue tetrazolium (NBT) reduction, and phagocytosis were studied in 37 CML p...

Randomized comparison of busulfan and hydroxyurea in chronic myelogenous leukemia: prolongation of survival by hydroxyurea. The German CML Study Group.

In a randomized multicenter study the influence of hydroxyurea versus busulfan on the duration of the chronic phase and on survival of chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) was determined. In addition cross resistance and adverse reactions of the drugs were analyzed. From July 1983 to January 1991, 441 CML patients were randomized to receive hydroxyurea or busulfan. Of these, 90.7% were Philadelph...

The biology and treatment of chronic myelogenous leukemia.

Over the past 2 decades, our understanding of the pathobiological events underlying chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) has grown. At the same time, effective transplant and nontransplant treatment approaches to CML have been developed that increase the options available to newly diagnosed patients, and that can cure or prolong survival in this formerly incurable disease. Newly diagnosed patient...
